Women's Lacrosse's first win of the season!

Hiram, Ohio-  Women’s Lacrosse pulled out a big win today at their first home game. The score today ended up being 19-5. Starters for the women Terriers were sophomores Sierra Ray, Alyse Gillentine, Rachel Metcalf, Erica Dulka , Melissa schilling, Kristen Belleza, juniors Autumn Osgood , Kayla Jenkins , Erin Smith, Kayla Cornett, Michaela Edmond, and senior Paige Mclain .The terriers took the field ready to get their first home game as a win.

The Terriers absolutely dominated the first half having 13 goals with Olivet having only three goals. The first goal was scored with 27:56 remaining in the first half. Ray took the ball through the Olivet’s defense and scored. Shortly after multiple goals were scored and the entire rest of the half was dominated by the Terriers. Hiram's shots on goal were outstanding compared to Olivet's having 28 shots on goal and Olivet having 11 shots on goal at half time.

Terriers leading goal scorers today were Osgood and Ray with 5 goals each.  The Terriers had fantastic defense in the second half and keeping a solid offense scoring 6 goals. They ended the game with an impressive score of 19-5. 

With this big win the Terriers have a boost in their confidence and are ready to get at their next opponent. Women’s lacrosse play Wilmington college this Saturday at home again. The Terriers will be out to get another win.  

           

           

A Loss Can Bring Out Great Things

     Mogadore, Ohio- Evan Harris had one of his best games of his life, in a game that he actually lost. Harris played for the Field Falcons of Field high school, in Mogadore, Ohio. He played as a nose tackle in this game. It was his senior year and he was getting padded up to play against the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders.  Roosevelt's starting quarter back was set to play at Pennsylvania State, which is a D1 program.

     He stepped out on the field ready to play however things weren’t going as well as him and his team had hoped. “Our team was losing badly since this school was a division higher than we were and they were bigger than we were,” Harris recalled.

     As they were playing there was something off about his team. Even though he was playing a stronger and bigger team, his team was still not playing to their potential. However Harris had a different story for himself. He was actually playing one of his best games.

     “I had a fantastic game,” Harris said.

     He came out with having about nine tackles and four sacs. This ended being an impressive victory for Harris because he went against a “soon to be” D1 athlete. Harris described how it felt, “It felt good that I had sucked him four times.”

     Even though the end of the game came out to be a loss for the Field Falcons, it was still hands down one of the most memorable and best games in Evan Harris’s life.

Terriers looking for some revenge

Hiram, Ohio- The Women’s lacrosse team is looking to pull out a win today at their first home game this afternoon. The women have lost their first three games this season in a spring break tournament. This leaves their record at 0-3. Women’s lacrosse finished off their season last year with a 5-11 record, having won two at home and three away.

     The Terriers face off against Olivet College. This will be Olivet’s first game of the season here at Hiram. Last year Olivet had a record of 9-7, having an away record of 4-4 and a home record of 3-2. With this being their first game the outcome of the game today could be anything.

     The Terriers had a tough loss to Olivet College in their 2015 season, 14-5. So the women are going to be out for some revenge.

     The game is scheduled to start  4:00 pm on Henry Field this afternoon.   

The Ball Stops Rolling

Hiram, Ohio- The Women’s Basketball team has something to be proud of this year. They were extremely close to breaking history’s record by being one win away. Being tied with history is still something to be proud of. The women ended up having a 12-14 season and 6-10 in conference.They had a 5-6 record at home and a 5-7 record away. They had a roller coaster of a season having their ups and downs this season, however the women still had big accomplishments.

     The Terriers had big victories this season. One impressive win the Terriers had was the match against Case Western Reserve. They pulled out a 77-75 win early in the season. This was the first time the women's basketball team has ever beat Case Western's women's basketball team. Another exciting and big win was against Oberlin later in the season with a score of 53-50. Their first game against them was a heartbreaking loss of 55-35. So this was a huge comeback and an important win for the Terriers. 

     The Terriers leading point scorer this year was sophomore, Mercedes Jones  averaging 15.3 points a game. Her total points this season was whopping 399. Following a close second was sophomore, Kaylee Shockley who averaged 10.8 points a game and had an overall 282 points this season. These women made a big impact for the Terriers during this season.

     Towards the end of the season however the Terriers hit a rough patch. They had a four game losing streak. A tough loss for the Terriers was the game against Fredonia State, which was brought into overtime. Fredonia came up big; winning the game, 70-68. This was a tough loss because this ended the Terriers biggest winning streak all season which was only three games. 

     The women's team didn't do as well as they expected, wanting to break the history record. However they still had great accomplishments through out the season that all the women and coaches should be proud of. With almost making it to breaking history's record the women will come out in full force next year, with some serious desire to break it next year. 

     The Terriers will be losing seniors, Rachel Ellis, Sarah Berger, Sierra Day, and Brianne Goodrich. Sierra Day was a starter for the Terriers, so the women will have to find someone to fill that spot next year. Day averaged about one point a game however has started 20 games all four years. A key player that will be coming back from an ACL injury is Kayla Yost, who was the Terriers leading point scorer last year. 

     Next year. the Terriers will come back stronger than ever.   

The game never forgotten

     Back in the day, in 1987 David Strukel plays one of his most memorable and last basketball games of his life. He was a court at the Boys Club in Massillon, Ohio. During his Sophomore year of high school he was the last player cut from the team, so he joined the Boys Club intramural team. His team name was the "Toxic Waste." He describes his team as getting drilled every game, "20-30 but I was the highest leading scorer." Their team had a disappointing 2-10 record. On a Monday night the stands were filled with a small turnout and the opponent stormed the court. They played the best team in the league called the "Skinny Boys."

     Strukel's mindset going into the game was all about his self achievements, "I knew we were going to get blown out, it was just to see how many points I was going to get."

     Toxic Waste comes out on the court with their royal blue and deep gold numbered jerseys. They ended up getting killed by this team the first half, however Strukel was the only one scoring points.
  
He wasn't too upset about losing, "I'm scoring, that's all that matter."

Now with 24 points already scored by Strukel and about 3 minutes left in the first half he crept up to the foul line and brought to ball in front of the defender. However, the defender lunged for the ball and collided right into Strukel's head. He looked up and just shot the ball, put when he looked up he noticed he was gushing blood from the side of his eye. One of the only concerns Dan, his brother and Strukel himself had, (while he was gushing blood) was that they ended up not getting the foul . The ref was focused on the blood and yelled at him to get off the court. Strukel was then rushed home to ice his eye and stop the blood. Later the next day, he was swollen to the size of a golf-ball on his eye. He paraded around school having to stop and explain what happened. He then explained what happened in the night of his most memorable basketball game ever. And he continues to have a scar on his eye to remind him of it every day.

One more win away from making history!

The Hiram women's basketball team plays at Denison tonight to bring home a big win and end their season strong. The Terriers are looking to make history. If the women win this game tonight, they will break the record for most wins in Hiram women's basketball history. The Terriers are 12-12 over all and 6-9 in conference. The women broke their four game losing streak on Saturday the 13th of Feb, with a win against Oberlin. Kaylee Shockley hit 20 points during the game where Mercedes Jones hit 12 points. These will be some key players going into the game against Denison.

     Their opponent, Denison, has an impressive  20-3 over all record and 13-1 in conference record. They traveled to Kenyon ten days ago and beat them, 39-25. Denison averages about 58 points per game which is just one point above the Terriers. Their key player that might be some trouble for the Terriers tonight is Jordan Holmes who had 22 points in their game against Kenyon and averages about 15.3 points a game. The Terriers lost to Denison earlier in the year only by ten points.

     With one step closer to making history and a win under the belt, the Terriers are ready to travel to Denison and defeat the Big Red.

     Tip off at Denison's home court is at 6 p.m. tonight, and the Terriers are ready to make history.

The Women's Basketball team pulls off a huge win against Oberlin!

Hiram, Ohio- The women’s basketball team pulls off a huge win against Oberlin 53-50 at today’s game. The starters for the Terriers were Sarah Berger,  Sierra Day, Rachel Ellis, Brianne Goodrich and Allison Vannoy. Oberlin started the game right off the bat with a 2 pointer. Kaylee hit the first three of the game in the first quarter. The score was 8-12 at the end of the first quarter. The game was very back and forth.

In the second quarter the terriers seemed to have trouble getting points on the scoreboard. Oberlin had a better offense then the terriers in the first half. Oberlin ended up in the lead 26-18 at the end of the second quarter.

Coming into the second half the Terriers momentum skyrocketed compared to the first half.  Allison Vannoy hit an impressive 2 jumper to bring the game 24-28 at 7:20. Shortly after Jones hit a jumper bringing the score then to 28-30 just trailing behind Oberlin. Towards the end of the 3^rd quarter, Dana Perrotta stole the ball twice within 20 seconds giving the Terriers the opportunity to get points. The gymnasium was extremely loud as the girls took the lead 45-41 with 3:17 left in the game. The girls ended up pulling off a win.

This win means their one step closer to making Hiram Women’s Basketball history! There next game is at Denison next Wednesday as they continue to look forward to making history.
